Vortrag: The slow life of orangutans

Orangutans have a slow life history: infants are nursed for 6-8 years before they manage to fully feed themselves independently. In the wild, females have their first offspring when c. 15 years old, but most males don’t succeed to sire before they are in their thirties. Not surprisingly, it has taken a dedicated team of researchers many years to unravel such basic facts of life of one of our closest relatives. Yet, knowledge of a species’ life history is essential for effective conservation measurements. In this talk I will show some highlights along our slow journey of discovery and some insights into our own evolutionary roots.
